Class Poem

Come, all ye Muses, bring Elysian dreams,

Breathe gently on my fancy till it beams

In brighter flame that it may light

My lowly thoughts to loftier height.

‘Tis only thus that I may ever write,

And do my subject justice, thoughts that blend

With those of my classmates who call me friend;

For they are Seniors with knowledge blest

And they demand, deserve all that is best.

Subject for an hundred verses there,

Of friendships formed that nothing can impair,

Of gala days and days when we were grave,

Of athletes that our class so freely gave

And Spartan-like adjured their shields to save;

How friends ‘gainst common enemy made cause

With whispered words and laws,-

These things are of the past, in verse would I seek consolation-

For I must leave them at our graduation.

Poetic Muse, tho’ I serve you but ill

When I would celebrate you with my quill,

With sweetest verse the Fates, those sisters three

Beguile, then beg a boon of them for me.

May silvery tongue secure success for thee.

Beg them keep closed their sharpened, shortening shears

And give my classmates long and happy years;

And tho’ in riches or in poverty they dwell,

May they ne’er forget our class of Nineteen-twelve.

As come the drops together and thus a river make,

As each one forms attachments from which ‘tis hard to break,

As each Spring comes the Freshet on its way to the sea,

As it gently murmurs ‘gainst its fate that it may not tarry.

As droop the verdant grasses after the flood has passed,

As bow farewell the rising reed and wish that it might last,

As rush the friendly waters that they may not be late,

As on the boson of the sea they sadly separate.

So we met as utter strangers, we part as friends today,

We leave our guiding banks behind altho’ we fain would stay,

The world, it is our ocean on which we friends must part,

But all of us will carry our class memories in our heart.

Hence vain deluding Joys!

That at each week’s glad ending do arise

Before my toil worn eyes;

Wist not that I must learn

Of Art, of Physics, of Geometry,

And English two and three?

With knowledge so elusive and alert

I have this year to flirt.

Today, O Folly, you’ll not have your turn!

But, hail! Thou Goddess sage and holy!

Hail, divinest Melancholy!

Who art with Knowledge so allied

He who to separate them tried,

Fell at once into that sea

Which students call "Flunkology."

The sea from which one outlet flows-

‘Tis called "Industry," "Labor," "Woes,"

But, Goddess, if thou wilt but lead

Me thru this school with utmost speed,

At thy altar will I sacrifice

Joy, Jollity, and Merry Life.
